Who I Am

I am Ashton Scott Snapp, and my website’s address is: https://ashtons.xyz.

What Personal Data I Collect and Why I Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

Cookies

If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. They will then be fed to the digital cookie monster.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

In this case, I have no control over any data as it is sent to an external server.

Analytics

Google’s ReCaptcha v2 is used on the contact form as a spam deterrent. This sends information to an analytics dashboard to display information such as the percent of requests that seem suspicious.

Who I Share Your Data With

Any and all comments you leave on my website are shared with everyone who visits the website. Other information is shared for the purpose of spam detection and only spam detection, through mechanisms like Aksimet (for comments) and ReCaptcha v2 (for the contact form). Everything else is a secret between you and me.

How Long I Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I have about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data we hold about you, in any fashion accessible to a CS student. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where I Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service called Aksimet.

My Contact Information

I prefer not to share my contact information publicly. If you wish to contact me, do so via email using the contact form on my website. If contact through any other means is necessary afterwards, I will share the necessary contact information in private.

Additional Information

How I Protect Your Data

I protect your data by not gathering a metric crap ton of it.

What Data Breach Procedures I Have in Place

If someone decides that my website is important enough to try and breach, I can just reset the server completely via my DigitalOcean dashboard. This will also erase all content on the server however, so I would have to start from scratch.

What Third Parties I Receive Data From

None. I am a firm believer in the idea that I shouldn’t have your data unless you want me to have it, so I don’t go looking for it.

What Automated Decision Making and/or Profiling I Do with User Data

None. I don’t believe in that kind of stuff.

Industry Regulatory Disclosure Requirements

Banana.
